Portrait of a portrait photographer

This is Bev Short – a mother of two lovely girls, a carer of two gorgeous dogs and one rat, a wife of a very nice and supportive husband, a great photographer, and a good friend of mine.

Bev asked me to take some images of her so that she could choose one to be displayed at the entrance of her new exhibition. Then the question came, how would I photograph a photographer, especially one who is having a big day exhibiting her images! You see Bev is not your everyday portrait photographer, you need to visit her exhibition to get a better idea of her unique style.

We thought about different possibilities, but one thing for sure was that we didn’t want Bev with a camera around her neck – that was going to be too much of a cliché. In the end, Bev said to me that she wanted to be portrayed the way I see her. So I captured these images of her looking glamorous with bare feet and walking her two gorgeous dogs in one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Wellington – Karori Cemetery – which is close to where she lives. But actually the image she chose was not one of these – so you’ll have to go to her exhibition to see it!

Her exhibition, All Woman – A Modern Portrait of New Zealand Women, is open to the public now until 8 July, at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Shed 11, Wellington Waterfront.
